Different materials require specific care approaches. Here is what you need to know.
Hardwood Timber
Teak, jarrah, and merbau are popular choices in Australia. These dense timbers resist rot but still need oiling to maintain their rich colour. Clean with mild soap, sand lightly if grey, then apply quality teak oil annually.
Softwood Timber
Pine and cedar furniture is more affordable but requires extra protection. Use wood preservatives and quality exterior paint or stain. Reapply protection every 1-2 years to prevent moisture damage and decay.
Wicker & Rattan
Natural wicker needs gentle cleaning with a soft brush and mild detergent. Keep it dry and store undercover during wet seasons. Synthetic wicker is more durable and simply needs wiping down with soapy water.
Metal Furniture
Aluminium resists rust but can oxidise. Wrought iron and steel need rust prevention. Clean regularly, treat rust spots promptly with converter, and apply protective wax or specialist metal sealant.
Plastic & Resin
UV exposure causes plastic to become brittle and fade. Clean with all-purpose cleaner and restore shine with automotive plastic restorer. Apply UV protectant spray to slow future degradation.
Outdoor Fabrics
Cushion covers and umbrellas need regular cleaning to prevent mould. Use fabric-safe cleaners and apply waterproofing spray. Store cushions indoors when not in use for extended periods.
